Johnson will serve a role in player development.

The Clippers are somewhat starting over after losing superstar Paul George and former MVP Russell Westbrook via free agency. L.A. is looking at a massive roster overhaul; however, they still have veterans Kawhi Leonard and James Harden leading the way as they open their new arena in Inglewood, the Intuit Dome.

The Clippers have some young players, such as Cam Chrstie, Bones Hyland, Kevin Porter Jr., Joshua Primo, and Kai Jones, who could play big roles for the team this upcoming season.

The 14-year NBA veteran has built a solid career. From 2005-19, Johnson played in 870 regular-season NBA games for the Detroit Pistons, Toronto Raptors, Boston Celtics, and Philadelphia 76ers. The 37-year-old averaged 7.0 points per game, 5.4 rebounds, and 1.2 assists, shooting 57 percent from the field.

Johnson was one of the few players drafted late and panned out a lengthy career for himself.

Johnson’s best season as a pro came in 2012-13, his third to last with the Raptors. He recorded 10.0 points, a career-high 7.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.0 steals, and 1.4 blocks in 28.7 minutes, and 81 games with 38 starts. His career-high came in 2013 when he recorded 32 points in a 106-94 win over the lowly Los Angeles Lakers at the time.

Johnson started his NBA career when the Pistons selected him with the No. 56 overall pick in the second round of the 2005 NBA Draft. He was one of the few who had come directly from high school to the NBA, just a year prior to the 2006 NBA Draft, which required American players to be at least one year removed from high school.

After four years in Detroit, bouncing from the NBA to the then-Development League, he was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks in a three-team trade that involved the San Antonio Spurs and Richard Jefferson. However, Johnson never played for the Bucks as he was traded in Aug. 2009 to the Raptors where he spent the next six seasons.

Johnson then spent the next four seasons of his career with the Celtics and 76ers, playing his last NBA season in 2019. After his time in the NBA, he spent two seasons playing for the G league Ignite and got his first taste in coaching by being named an assistant coach with the Ignite in Oct. 2023.

Johnson will get his first taste of coaching in the NBA this upcoming season.
