South Korean cross-country skiing duo Han Dasom and Lee Eui-jin were disqualified from the women’s sprint event at the 2026 Milano Cortina Olympics on Tuesday by the the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) after they were caught using an illegal substance on their equipment.
According to Reuters, Dasom and Eui-jin’s skis tested positive for fluor — a fluorinated wax that was banned years ago because of the harm it causes to both humans and the environment. It was previously used to improve the glide of ski blades.
“Initially adapted from use on sailing boats, where it improved their gliding ability, the FIS have described how fluor’s water-repellent qualities are ‘a big advantage in wet or humid conditions,’” The Athletic’s Jacob Whitehead wrote.

Dasom and Eui-jin’s disqualification likely didn’t have much bearing on the results. The duo entered the event ranked 157th and 158th in the World Cup standings, so neither were likely to challenge for a gold medal.
“The athletes’ products are not fluorine wax,” a Korea Ski Association spokesperson told South Korean news outlet Newsis. “They tested negative in all previous international competitions with no prior issues. We are also perplexed.
“We will consult experts from wax and ski manufacturers to investigate whether the issue lies with the wax or skis.”
This isn’t the only cheating scandal of the 2026 Winter Olympics.
Just days ago, World Anti-Doping Agency president Witold Banka confirmed the organization was investigating an incidence of Olympic ski jumpers injecting themselves in the genitals with substances to help improve their jump distances.
