49ers Coach Kyle Shanahan Says Key Starter Could Miss Time
Brock Purdy was back in action for the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday when they visited the Arizona Cardinals, and he looked excellent despite missing each of the last six games with a toe injury. With him looking just about every bit like his old self, the 49ers got themselves a relatively easy 41-22 win.
However, the 49ers, who have been ravaged by injuries dating back to training camp last year, continued to be hit by injuries in Sunday’s contest. Several of their defensive players had to leave the game due to various ailments, and kicker Eddy Piñeiro also had to depart because of a hamstring injury.
After the game, as the Niners left the field, Piñeiro was limping noticeably.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan said afterward that the 39-year-old may have suffered the type of injury that could lead to him missing some time.
“We think he pulled it, but not sure. We’ll have to check tomorrow,” Shanahan said, per 49ers Webzone.

Piñeiro came to the 49ers in time for their Week 2 contest against the New Orleans Saints after they had released Jake Moody. In two seasons and one week with San Francisco, Moody had been wildly inconsistent, and he had missed a late extra point attempt in Super Bowl LVIII that could’ve allowed the team to earn its first Vince Lombardi Trophy since the 1994 campaign.
But Piñeiro has been making Niners Faithful forget about the blood pressure spikes it collectively experienced whenever Moody lined up for a kick attempt. He went three of three on field goals on Sunday, and thus far, he has made all 22 of his field goal tries this season. However, he missed two of his four extra point tries versus Arizona, making him 18 of 22 on the season in that category.
In that game, Purdy completed 19 of 26 passing attempts for 200 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. Star running back Christian McCaffrey also looked outstanding with 81 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries while adding 40 yards and another touchdown on five pass receptions.

San Francisco improved to 7-4 on the season with Sunday’s win, and while it is 1.5 games behind the first-place Los Angeles Rams, it is well within striking distance for, at the very least, a wild-card playoff spot, despite its many injuries.
