49ers Defense Suffers Another Major Injury Setback After Falcons Win

At the rate the San Francisco 49ers are going, they just set a record for most players used in a single regular season.

The team has already lost All-Pros defensive end Nick Bosa and All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner to season-ending injuries, and San Francisco has had had to play without quarterback Brock Purdy, receivers Ricky Pearsall, Brandon Aiyuk, Jacob Cowing, and Trent Taylor, offensive linemen Spencer Burford, Benjamin Bartch, and Jake Brendal, defensive linemen Yetur Gross-Matos and Tarron Jackson, and cornerbacks Upton Stout, Renardo Green, Jacob Robinson, and Tre Tomlinson at varying points this season.

And though they’ve found a way to win five of their first seven games while putting their roster depth to the test, it’s a rare occurrence the 49ers make it through a week without collecting a new injury.

This time, another key piece of San Francisco’s defensive front has found his way to the injury report, as ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the 49ers’ pass-rush is about to take another bit hit.

“49ers have lost another defensive end to injury: Bryce Huff injured his hamstring near the end of Sunday night’s win over Atlanta and HC Kyle Shanahan told reporters, ‘Hopefully it won’t be longer than two weeks,’” Schefter reported. “49ers already were without DEs Nick Bosa and Tarron Jackson.”

San Francisco 49ers pass-rushers Mykel Williams, Bryce Huff and Sam Okuayinonu

Huff has been San Francisco’s top pass-rusher since Bosa went down.

The 28-year-old edge-rusher has logged 24 pressures, 16 hurries, six tackles for loss, four sacks, three QB hits, and two forced fumbles this season — all team highs — and he’s the only player aside from Bosa to record multiple sacks through seven games.

Huff has played the second-most pass-rushing snaps on the team (175) behind rookie Mykel Williams (196), and in his absence, Sam Okuayinonu, Trevis Gipson, and Robert Beal Jr. should see an uptick in playing time.
