Just a short week ago, Samuel requested a trade, which the 49ers agreed they would grant. Out of respect for the star receiver has given San Francisco, general manager Jon Lynch stated they would allow the pass-catcher to explore a trade.

There were plenty of rumors about teams that were interested in Samuel, but it makes complete sense that the Commanders were the team to be heavily interested in the dual-threat receiver.

Samuel was used in the passing game, but also lined up and took direct snaps as a running back in Kyle Shanahan’s offense. Now, it will be interesting to see what the plans that Kliff Kingsbury has for the former 49ers star.

As stated, Samuel now joins Daniels and McLaurin to create an even more dangerous offense. The good news is that the upcoming second-year quarterback now has another star receiver to throw the ball to.

McLaurin secured 1,096 yards, but there wasn’t another pass catcher that came close to that. Tight end Zack Ertz was the next most productive, bringing in 654 yards. The team needs a solid WR1 to line up aside from McLaurin, and they have that now.

The 49ers only got a fifth-round selection for the trade, which may seem a bit low, but the team is looking to build a far younger core. Lynch also stated that the team could be exploring the opportunity to trade away Brandon Aiyuk.

Aiyuk suffered a torn ACL and MCL during the 2024 season and is likely going to take a bit to get back to regular action. Still, he could fetch something in the third to fifth-round pick selection in a trade as well.

With Samuel out, the 49ers are likely looking into a bigger role for Ricky Pearsall. They might also be trying to load up to take a bigger swing at one of the upcoming free agents receives. Tee Higgins and Stefon Diggs are two options that come to mind.

Either way, the 49ers got some trade compensation, and the Commanders got a viable starter.
