49ers Showing Interest in Veteran QB Amid Brock Purdy News
The San Francisco 49ers have been hard with injuries to start the season. The torn ACL that defensive end Nick Bosa suffered in Week 3 is a big hurt for the defense.

On offense, the 49ers are still awaiting the return of wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who is recovering from ACL, MCL and meniscus injuries sustained last season. San Francisco will be without George Kittle against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday due to a hamstring injury, but the team hopes he returns to play in Week 7 against the Atlanta Falcons.

On Friday, the 49ers ruled out quarterback Brock Purdy in Week 6 due to a toe injury that has kept in sidelined in three other contests this season. The quarterback’s injury is concerning, as backup quarterback Mac Jones is battling an oblique and knee injury.
Per the league’s transaction wire on Friday, San Francisco is showing interest in adding to the quarterback room amid injuries to Purdy and Mac Jones. The 49ers worked out Quinten Dormady, Desmond Ridder and Nathan Peterman.
Ridder has the most in-game experience of the three, starting in 18 games and appearing in 25 games. The third-round pick by the Atlanta Falcons in the 2022 draft is 8-9 as a starter, throwing for 3,544 yards, 14 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
Peterman has been in the league longer. He’s 1-4 in his five games as a starter. The veteran quarterback has appeared in 15 games. The fifth-round pick by the Buffalo Bills in 2017 has thrown for 712 yards, four touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Peterman last played for the Falcons’ practice squad in 2024.
It’ll be interesting to see if the 49ers sign any of the three quarterbacks. In addition to Purdy and Jones, Adrian Martinez is the third quarterback on the 53-man roster. San Francisco has no quarterbacks on the practice squad.
Despite being beaten up early, the 49ers are 4-1 and have a one-game lead in the NFC West over the Los Angeles Rams and Seattle Seahawks. San Francisco will have a chance to be even scarier in the NFC if the roster can start to heal up as the season progresses.
