The Bidens’ Royal Meetings in Photos: From Prince Harry to Princess Kate


From first entering the White House in 2009 as the vice presidential couple to returning as president and first lady in 2021, Joe and Jill Biden have regularly met with leaders and heads of states from around the world, including members of the royal family.

Biden’s presidency has spanned a period of dramatic change in the history of British royalty. In 2022, Queen Elizabeth II died at the age of 96 with Biden becoming the first sitting president to attend the state funeral of a British monarch.

The president also welcomed her successor, King Charles III to the throne, with Jill Biden traveling to London to attend the historic coronation ceremony in May 2023.

As the Bidens prepare to leave the White House in 2025, Newsweek takes a look at some of their royal meetings in photos.

King Charles and Queen Camilla – The White House 2015

In 2015, King Charles and Queen Camilla (at that time still the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall) paid a four-day official visit to the U.S., where they met with President Barack Obama and then-Vice President Joe Biden. The group were photographed together in the Oval Office.

Prince Harry – Invictus Games 2016

When Prince Harry founded the Invictus Games in 2014, he’d been inspired by a visit to the U.S. Warrior Games a year earlier. When it came time to hold the second event in 2016, he did so in Orlando, Florida, and he invited the Bidens and then-first lady Michelle Obama to attend.

Prince Harry – Invictus Games 2017

At the 2017 Invictus Games, held in Toronto, Canada, Harry was reunited with the Bidens, who this time brought the president along with them. The games were significant for Harry as they marked the first time Meghan Markle attended.

Princess Kate – Early Years Education Visit 2021

In 2021, Frist Lady Jill Biden met with Princess Kate for a rare joint engagement to a school in Cornwall, England, where they discussed the importance of early years education. Biden traveled to Britain with her husband, who attended a meeting with G7 leaders.

Queen Elizabeth II State Funeral – 2022

The Bidens became the first presidential couple of the United States to attend the state funeral of a British monarch in 2022, after the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

The couple took their seats at Westminster Abbey alongside representatives from 168 countries and members of the world’s royal families.

Prince William – Boston 2022

In December 2022, Prince William and Princess Kate paid their first working visit to the United States in eight years, where they attended the Earthshot Prize awards ceremony in the city of Boston.

Joe Biden had a private meeting with the royal during his visit at the at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library.

Princess Kate – Coronation Reception 2023

The coronation celebrations for King Charles and Queen Camilla took place in early May 2023, with representatives from Britain’s world partners and allies invited to attend.

As first lady, Jill Biden attended without the president, being photographed meeting Princess Kate and Ukrainian first lady Olena Zelenska at a pre-coronation reception held at Buckingham Palace on May 5.

King Charles and Queen Camilla Coronation – 2023

For the historic coronation ceremony itself on May 6, Jill Biden was accompanied to Westminster Abbey by her granddaughter Finnegan Biden.

King Charles – Windsor Castle 2023

Joe Biden returned to Britain in July 2023, where he met with King Charles III at Windsor Castle to attend a military review and a reception for business leaders connected with environmental issues. The president and king were photographed together in the castle’s long corridor to mark the visit.

Prince William – D-Day Commemorations in France 2024

In June 2024, Biden was photographed meeting Prince William again at the 80th anniversary commemorations of the D-Day landings in France.

The international event saw a number of representatives from the allied nations that participated in World War II come together to pay respects to those who participated in and lost their lives during the effort to liberate France from Nazi occupation.
