Former Major League Pitcher Dies at 31: Reports
The Bravos de Leon of the Mexican League confirmed the death of pitcher Reyes Moronta, 31, who was active in Major League Baseball as recently as last year.
According to multiple reports, Moronta died in a traffic accident near his home.
In 177 major league games, all as a reliever, Moronta went 10-11 with a 3.05 ERA and 202 strikeouts in 171.1 innings. He appeared in parts of six seasons for the San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Dodgers, Arizona Diamondbacks and Los Angeles Angels.
Moronta was originally signed by the Giants at 16 as an amateur pitcher in the Dominican Republic. He debuted with the Giants in 2017 and remained with the organization until 2021.
Moronta split the 2022 season between the Dodgers and Diamondbacks, before finishing his major league career with the Angels in May 2023.
According to his MLB transactions page, Moronta signed as a free agent with the Bravos de León in May and was released just this past Thursday.
Mike Rodriguez was first to report the news Sunday via Twitter/X:
Hector Gomez reported that Moronta died while driving home on a four-wheeler. According to the Dominican news outlet El Pregonero, the accident occurred in the Quinigua neighborhood of the Santiago province, in front of his father’s house.
