Stephen King Says He Convinced MAGA Folks to Vote for Kamala Harris
Horror novelist Stephen King wrote in a social media post that wearing a shirt in support of Vice President Kamala Harris has convinced Make America Great Again (MAGA) supporters to vote for her instead of former president Donald Trump in the upcoming presidential election.
King, who is a vocal critic of Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, wrote on X, formerly Twitter, on Thursday afternoon, “Wow! MAGA guys and gals saw me in my Kamala shirt and immediately said, ‘Okay, I’ll vote for her!'”
MAGA supporters are those who rally behind Trump’s slogan, which has become synonymous with his political platform and conservative ideals.
King called the alleged experience “amazing!”
Newsweek reached out to Harris’ and Trump’s campaign for comment via email on Thursday. Trump spokesperson Steven Cheung previously said that “Stephen King is a dumbass” in a statement to Newsweek.
His comments came nearly an hour and a half after he posted a photo of himself in a black shirt featuring an image of Harris in the style of former President Barack Obama’s campaign graphic, with the words “I’m Speaking.”
Harris famously used the phrase in 2020 during a vice-presidential debate with then-Vice President Mike Pence, when he interrupted her, and she responded, “Mr. Vice President, I’m speaking.” After that debate, shirts like the one King is wearing began appearing on online storefronts.
However, in a more recent instance, she used the phrase while at a campaign rally in Michigan last week after several pro-Palestinian protestors interrupted her rally chanting “Kamala, Kamala you can’t hide! We won’t vote for genocide.”
She called out the protesters, saying, “You know what? If you want Donald Trump to win, then say that. Otherwise, I’m speaking.”
King, a prolific best-selling author who has written more than 65 books, has been very vocal in this presidential election. He frequently posts on social media, encouraging people to elect the Democratic candidate, now Harris, over Trump, whom he calls “dangerous” and a “child throwing a tantrum.”
In that same post earlier this month he told Republicans, “If you have to hold your nose to vote for Harris, please do so.” King has over 7.1 million followers on X.
Earlier this week, he said Trump “has really lost it” after the GOP nominee went on a rant claiming that Harris used artificial intelligence (AI) in a photo to bolster her rally crowd size in Detroit.
A Harris campaign official told Newsweek via email late Sunday afternoon, “I can confirm that the photo was taken by Harris campaign staff and not modified by AI in any way.”
Newsweek reached out to King’s representatives at his agency via email on Thursday.
