Bear Captivated by Cable Cars Soaring by Delights Internet: ‘Magical’

A video of a bear “radiating energy” after spotting gondola lifts passing by above it while having a swim has gone viral on TikTok.

The clip was posted by @scrwyouguysimgoinghome and has amassed over 444,000 views since it was shared on July 8. The moment was captured at the Kicking Horse Mountain Resort in Golden, a town in the Canadian province of British Columbia, offering views over the Rocky Mountains.

The footage begins with a wide shot of the resort, with gondola lifts moving along cables amid a forested mountain landscape. The video then zooms in on a bear submerged in water below the gondolas. The bear is shown looking up toward the sky, appearing to be fixated on the gondolas as ripples form in the water.

A caption shared with the post reads: “Boo watching the gondola cabins go by and enjoying a swim.”

The Kicking Horse Mountain Resort is located around four miles east of Glacier National Park and 14 miles west of Yoho National Park.

Canada’s mountain national parks, which include the Canadian Rocky and Columbia Mountains, are home to grizzly and black bears.

Canadian government website Parks Canada says: “You can run into a bear anywhere here, be it on a busy trail close to town or in the remote backcountry. Bears generally prefer to avoid people.

“Although the chances of having an encounter with an aggressive bear are low, proper planning before you head out can help reduce your risk,” the website notes.

Bears are “extremely sensitive to the stress of human activity” and you can help protect them by avoiding encounters with them, Parks Canada says.

If the bear has not yet noticed your presence, the government body advises attempting to move away quietly without getting its attention.

But if the bear is aware of you, Parks Canada advises doing the following:

  • Stay calm. Your calm demeanor can reassure the bear, while screams or sudden movements may trigger an attack.
  • Speak to the bear, talking calmly and firmly. “This lets the bear know you are human and not a prey animal. If a bear rears on its hind legs and waves its nose about, it is trying to identify you,” Parks Canada says.
  • Back away slowly and never run, as running may trigger a chase.
  • Make yourself appear big, picking up small children and remain in a group.
  • Don’t drop your backpack as it can provide protection.
