Kathy Bates Breaks Down in Emotional Interview
Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors
Kathy Bates received some shocking news about her own history during an interview with CBS Sunday Morning.
The 76-year-old has been back in the spotlight now that her new show, Matlock, premiered on CBS — first appearing to announce her eventual retirement in the New York Times and then walking the statement back on the red carpet. But the Academy Award winner’s emotional reaction during an interview with Ben Mankiewicz has viewers especially stunned.
While talking about her Oscar win for Misery in 1991, Bates revealed that her mother was less than thrilled by her achievement. “She said, ‘I don’t know what all the excitement’s about, you didn’t discover the cure for cancer,” Bates explained. Clearly, their relationship was complicated — Bates went on to add that she forgot to thank her mother in her acceptance speech.
Mankiewicz gently corrects her. “You know, you did thank her,” he said. “At the end of your speech, you thanked her.” Bates continued to disagree, so they showed her the video.
As the tape rolled, and Bates heard herself say that she’d like to thank “my family, my friends, my mom at home, and my dad, who I hope is watching somewhere,” her eyes widened in shock and she clasped her hands over her mouth. “Thank you,” she said to Mankiewicz. “Why did I think I didn’t thank her? Oh, what a relief.”
She went on to say that when her mother died, Bates hoped that her spirit would be able to live on through her. “Even though we had so many difficulties,” she said, “I wanted her spirit to come into me and enjoy everything I was enjoying because of what she’d given up.”
Bates, a two-time cancer survivor, seems to have a lot to enjoy in this new phase of her life. She mentioned that she “shed 100 pounds” and was able to go to the premiere of Matlock “in Armani.”
