Niece Motorsports Releases Matt Mills Health Update After Driver Is Hospitalized

NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series team Niece Motorsports have provided an update on their driver, Matt Mills, following a large crash at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

The crash involved Mills’s vehicle and fellow driver Conner Jones and left the former’s car engulfed in flames. Thankfully, Mills managed to exit his vehicle independently after the collision. He was subsequently taken to a local hospital for medical evaluation.

Niece Motorsports has since released a further update which confirms the driver will remain in the hospital overnight. The team stated:

“Matt Mills will remain at a local hospital for continued observation overnight.

“Mills, driver of the No. 42 for Niece Motorsports, was transported for observation after an incident in Saturday afternoon’s NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series race at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

“Matt and team are grateful for the outpouring of support. Further updates will be provided as they become available.”

Born in 1996, Mills began racing at the age of 12 with go-karts before moving on to Junior Champ Karts and Open Wheel Modifieds. In more recent years, he has driven for various teams across multiple series, including the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and the Xfinity Series. He joined Niece Motorsports in 2024, driving the No. 42 Chevrolet Silverado full-time, and recently signed a contract extension for the 2025 season.

Jones has also since released a statement taking responsibility for the crash and issuing a public apology for “unsportsmanlike behavior”. He commented:

“I have not yet had the chance to personally apologize to Matt for the incident that took place during today’s race at Homestead-Miami Speedway, but I intend to do so.

“Matt and I have encountered several on-track incidents this season, and I let my frustration get the best of me. I underestimated the impact my actions would have on Matt, and I deeply regret the consequences that followed.

“I would like to extend my sincerest apologies to Matt, Niece Motorsports, NASCAR, and my entire ThorSport Racing team for my unsportsmanlike behavior. My thoughts are with Matt during this time after hearing that he been taken to the hospital for further evaluation following the contact on the racetrack.”
