Russian Losses in Ukraine Break Grim Record Two Days in a Row
On Monday, Russian troops suffered the highest number of casualties in a single day since Moscow invaded Ukraine, breaking a grim record set only the day before.
Russia lost 1,950 of its troops on November 11, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, adding to the 1,770 casualties reported by Kyiv on Sunday.
The estimations suggest that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s military forces have now lost a total of 712,610 men during the conflict, which started on February 24, 2022.
Before the last two days of major losses, the previously held record was in mid-May, when it was reported that Moscow sustained 1,740 casualties in a single day.
It is hard to independently verify the number of men lost on the battlefield. Russia and Ukraine do not share regular updates of how many fighters in their own militaries have been killed in the conflict or injured.
Newsweek has contacted the defense ministries of both Russia and Ukraine via email for comment.
In a post shared on X, formerly Twitter, on Monday, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry wrote, “Every 49 seconds, Russia lost one soldier. We make the occupiers pay the highest price for their brutal invasion.”
This comes following reports of a Russian attack in the Kursk region on Monday, which the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense shared on X, adding that its soldiers in the 95th Air Assault Brigade had “repelled a massive Russian attack.”
The ministry added, “Our defenders destroyed 28 units of armored equipment and more than 100 soldiers.”
The footage shared by the defense ministry showed what appeared to be a car being targeted and then exploding, as well as other vehicles seeming to be hit by explosives.
Footage of the incident was also recorded by Ukraine’s 225th Separate Assault Battalion showing explosions hitting cars driving into a settlement.
Newsweek has contacted the 225th Separate Assault Battalion via email for comment.
The 225th Battalion wrote on the post that the Russians were “storming in columns: one by one, on the same road.”
“They rod and we destroy them. Armored tins go up on the road, and drones and mortars catch up with those who ran across the village,” the force team added.
The expense of the war has also reportedly been found to have taken a massive toll on Russia, with the country’s economy in danger of “burnout,” according to analysis by the Institute for the Study of War.
