Greens Recalled Due to Listeria Contamination
Curly mustard greens are being recalled after they were found to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, bacteria that can cause serious and sometimes fatal illness, according to an announcement by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Monday.
Baker Farms, based in Georgia, is voluntarily recalling bags of their Curly Mustard, sold in 16oz plastic bags and with the best-by date November 21, 2024.
On November 29, the Texas Department of State Health Services notified Baker Farms that its product tested positive for listeria.
Listeria is the third leading cause of death from foodborne illness in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, leading to an estimated 1,600 infections and 260 deaths per year.
In most people, eating food contaminated with listeria will cause short-term food poisoning symptoms, such as a high fever, headache, body stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.
But infection with the bacteria—called listeriosis—can be serious or even fatal, particularly among young children, elderly people and those with weakened immune systems. Listeriosis can also cause pregnancy loss and stillbirth and can infect a newborn baby.
No illnesses have been reported in connection with Baker Farms’ Curly Mustard, as of the FDA’s announcement on Monday, and the greens are now out of date, but consumers are nevertheless urged not to consume any recalled curly mustard greens they may still have in their fridges or freezers.
These curly mustard greens were packaged in clear plastic bags on November 4 and distributed from November 5 to November 9.
The curly mustard was distributed to nine southeastern U.S. states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee and Texas.
The products affected by this recall can be identified by the product code “8 13098 02018 4” and lot code “bak144-6806” located on their packaging. No other bagged greens are affected by this recall.
Consumers with questions can contact Baker Farms by calling (844) 761-2244, Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. EST. They are urged to discard or return any impacted products.
Newsweek has approached Baker Farms for comment via an online form.
Other ongoing recalls include cucumbers contaminated with salmonella, dog food contaminated with salmonella, and fruit and vegetables that may be contaminated with listeria.
