Hearts Melts as Puppy’s Fear of Vacuum Cleaner Keeps Christmas Tree Safe
A dog mom’s genius solution to keeping her puppy away from the Christmas tree has left the internet in stitches.
The woman, who posts as @novasgoldenadventures, shared how she stopped her golden retriever from disrupting her festive display by placing a vacuum cleaner nearby. The video garnered 130,300 views and 7,796 likes on TikTok.
“Today my hooman figured out how to keep me out the Christmas tree,” she wrote as the text overlaid the video, pretending to be the internal monologue of her pooch.
“What is that?” she teasingly asks the pup when she pans the camera to Nova, clearly sulking, then to the tree and the repellent tactic.
“I am not scared of anything more than the vacuum cleaner. I will not go anywhere close to it,” she captioned the video.
Dogs often react negatively to vacuum cleaners due to their loud, unpredictable noise and sudden movements.
According to Outward Hound, vacuums can trigger a dog’s fight-or-flight response because they perceive them as a threat. The noise disrupts a dog’s sensitive hearing, and their instinctive reaction is often to bark, hide, or flee. Training techniques, like desensitizing dogs to sound over time, can help manage this behavior, but many dogs will always view vacuums with suspicion.
Keeping pets away from Christmas trees can be challenging during the holiday season.
Leash and Learn NYC recommends several strategies to dog-proof your festive decor. These include placing a physical barrier around the tree, such as a baby gate or playpen, anchoring it securely to prevent it from toppling, and avoiding breakable ornaments or tinsel that can attract a dog’s curiosity.
Commenters were impressed by the dog mom’s ingenuity.
“That is playing dirty,” said one user.
“Dog kryptonite,” said another viewer.
“The curse of the vacuum cleaner,” said a TikToker named Rosemary.
“The only time we kept our cats out of the Christmas tree was when we put the Christmas train under it, they were terrified,” said TikTok user Samantha.
“This would 100% not stop my golden pup. We had to use a gate around our tree,” said another pet parent.
