Falcons QB Michael Penix Jr. Shares Hilarious Place He Heard Starter News
The Atlanta Falcons did the inevitable on Tuesday, announcing that they would be switching their starting quarterbacks from veteran Kirk Cousins to rookie southpaw Michael Penix Jr.
The Falcons are taking a big swing, and they hope it pays off as they’re still very much alive in the NFC Playoff picture. The team announced the news on Tuesday, and many were surprised, including Penix, who shared where he was when the news broke.
The rookie told reporters on Wednesday he was in line to get a hot dog at Costco when the Falcons called him.
“I was shopping with my girlfriend—we was at Costco,” Penix said. “I got the call, they told me I was gonna be the starting quarterback for the rest of the season. As you can imagine, it was some nerves and excitement, but just super blessed to be in this position.”
The 24-year-old has only thrown five passes in the NFL. However, a poor performance by Cousins on Monday night against the Las Vegas Raiders made it easy for the Falcons to move forward with the rookie Southpaw.
Falcons head coach Raheem Morris has this to say in a statement about promoting Penix.
“After review we have made the decision Michael Penix will be the Atlanta Falcons starting quarterback moving forward,” Morris said in the statement. “This was a football decision and we are fully focused on preparing the team for Sunday’s game against the New York Giants.”
“We didn’t play particularly well at the quarterback position,” Morris said Tuesday afternoon. “We didn’t play well (Monday) at that spot. I like to be open and honest about those things. It’s always going to be those questions marks. It’s always going to be those question marks when it comes to head coach, when it comes to the quarterback. And you got to be really transparent about it. We got to play better. I think that’s the thing that’s got to be put out there, that we got to play better, and that’s the thing that’s got to be addressed. This thing’s got to happen in order for us to find ways to win versus our next opponent, which is the New York Giants.”
The keys have been handed to the former Washington Huskie, and he’ll look to carry Atlanta to the playoffs for the first time since the 2017 season.
