Mets Predicted to Trade for $73 Million Ace in Blockbuster Offseason Deal
The New York Mets have dominated offseason headlines by signing outfielder Juan Soto to a record-breaking $765 million deal. President of baseball operations David Stearns has other to-do list items to accomplish for his roster. One is to acquire another top-of-the-rotation starter. Could it come in the form of a trade for Minnesota Twins ace Pablo López?
He’s been dependable since the beginning of 2022. López has started 32 games in each of the past three seasons, which has led to three straight campaigns of 180-plus innings pitched. All that time on the mound has resulted in a 36-28 record with a 3.83 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 606 strikeouts.
Stearns needed to rebuild his rotation this winter after losing Sean Manaea, Luis Severino and Jose Quintana from the 2024 group to free agency. He’s already made three acquisitions, signing Frankie Montas and Clay Holmes to multi-year deals, as well as Griffin Canning to a one-year pact.
ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported the Twins are getting calls from teams regarding López’s availability. If Minnesota was interested in dealing him, what could it take from the Mets to land the right-hander? Sporting News’ Jackson Roberts proposed the following hypothetical swap:
– Mets receive: starting pitcher Pablo López
– Twins receive: outfielder Ryan Clifford, right-handed pitcher Nolan McLean and third baseman Brett Baty.
Clifford (No. 4) and McLean (No. 9) are both top 10 prospects in New York’s system, according to MLB.com. That’s a lot to give up, but López could be a very affordable hurler to pair with staff ace Kodai Senga for the next few seasons.
He’ll earn $21.75 million each year from 2025-27, which is part of a four-year, $73.5 million deal he signed with the Twins ahead of 2024.
