Yankees Make Trade With Cubs to Bolster Bullpen
The New York Yankees and Chicago Cubs hooked up on another trade Wednesday. This one won’t move the needle nearly as much as December’s blockbuster deal that sent Cody Bellinger to The Bronx, but it could create a pathway to the majors that didn’t exist in Chicago for one pitcher.
Michael Arias, a right-handed reliever, was designated for assignment by the Cubs when they signed veteran Colin Rea on Monday. Now, he’ll go to the Yankees in a deal that sends cash considerations to Chicago.
Arias, 23, combined to go 6-2 with five saves and a 4.77 ERA in 49 relief appearances with Double-A Tennessee (16 games) and Triple-A Iowa (33 games) in 2024. His 49 appearances were tied for the most among Cubs minor leaguers last season.
Arias began the 2024 season with Tennessee before being promoted to Iowa on May 29.
