Cat That Hilariously Demands Attention From Owner Wins Pet of the Week

From a rare dog breed mix that left the internet in awe to a doggie makeover that saw a pet go from “stray to slay,” viral pet stories haven’t disappointed this week.

Newsweek readers have also been sending their funny and heartwarming videos, pictures and stories about their pets for our Newsweek Pet of the Week award.

If you want your pet to be in next week’s line-up, make sure to follow the instructions at the end of this article.

Corinne Arkerson

This week’s Pet of the Week is the lovingly named Kooky Cali, a 10-year-old cat who always wants to be the center of her owners’ world.

In order to get the attention she craves, Cali has come up with a great solution—using her voice and paws.

In a hilarious video shared with Newsweek, owner Corinne Arkerson shared footage of Cali hitting her owner as he walks by and meowing for good measure.

“She comes hits and screams for attention. Absolutely hysterical will run across the room to jump on the couch for non stop attention—so sweet,” Arkerson told Newsweek.

Finalists

Buttercup the dog

Marne Omen

Our first finalist this week is Buttercup, adopted by owner Marne Omen after spending nearly a year in a local SPCA.

“We fostered Buttercup before adopting her so we could take her home immediately,” Omen told Newsweek. A senior dog, Buttercup has various health issues including Lyme disease, ear and bladder infections, arthritis, digestive problems, food sensitivities, and lingering fears from a hoarding situation.

Despite these challenges, Omen and her family were committed to providing her with a loving forever home.

Now, two years later, Buttercup is living her best life and has truly become a part of the family. “We never expected her to be the loving, exuberant dog she is now,” Omen said, proving how much she has thrived since coming to her new home.

Djinn Djinn and Apple

Desiree Dedeaux

Next up this week is Yorkshire terriers Djinn Djinn and Apple, who live with owner Desiree Dedeaux.

“They are 4 years old, 9 lbs., and 3 years old and 4 lbs., respectively,” Dedeaux told Newsweek. The adorable pair have a unique routine whenever Desiree steps outside.

“They know they aren’t allowed outside without a leash, so this is what they do when I go outside,” she explained, sharing a picture of the two pups eagerly peering through the crack in the door to come outside.

Vega the cat
Vega, who loves his food, is seen.

Susan Highley

Last but not least this week is Vega, a ginger cat with a big personality and even bigger appetite. Owner Susan Highley told Newsweek: “His favorite thing to do is watch the neighbors from our bathroom window. He’s a nosy guy.”

When he isn’t working on his neighborhood watch, Vega is on the lookout for food. “He loves his food, which you can see by looking at his chubby belly,” Highley joked.
