Eighteen States Sound Alarm on Cost of Ending Birthright Citizenship
On Tuesday, attorneys general from 18 states filed a lawsuit to prevent President Donald Trump from terminating a longstanding immigration policy known as birthright citizenship, which ensures that children born in the U.S. are citizens regardless of their parents’ status.
Trump’s executive order, spanning roughly 700 words and issued late Monday, is an attempt to fulfill a promise he made during his presidential campaign. However, its success is uncertain, as it is likely to face an extensive legal battle over the president’s immigration policies.
