Kellen Moore Reportedly Not Sold on Saints Job Despite Major Interest From Franchise

The Dallas Cowboys passed on Kellen Moore and the New Orleans Saints are eager to snag him as their new head coach.

But reports say that Moore is skeptical because of the team’s questionable quarterback room.

According to The Athletic’s Diana Russini, there was “scuttlebutt” swirling that Moore may be uninterested in taking the helm with the Saints because they “don’t have a quarterback already in place.”

Though on the other hand, Russini mentioned that there is a sense Moore has warmed to the idea of coaching the Saints, as the team recognizes they need a year to rebuild the roster and don’t expect immediate success from a coach in the first season.

The Saints’ quarterback situation this season was nothing short of disastrous. Five different names took snaps at one point or another with none truly emerging to have any long-term promise. A big reason why this occurred was because Derek Carr was injured on a pair of instances, ultimately ending his campaign in Week 14.

While he threw for 15 touchdowns in 10 games and averaged over 214 yards, Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener played a game of hot potato in his stead as neither of them averaged 200 yards and both held passer ratings of 70 and below.

New Orleans has narrowed their search down to either Moore or New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka, but it’s believed that the job is Moore’s if he should accept it.

The Saints are the last team to have a head coaching vacancy and given that Moore is coaching in the Super Bowl, they could be waiting until after the Philadelphia Eagles run is over with to extend the offer.

Moore played a pivotal role in crafting one of the NFL’s top rushing offenses this season, propelling Saquon Barkley to being the league’s top rusher and within spitting distance of the all-time record. He posted a total of 2,005 yards and 13 touchdowns.

The Eagles also excelled overall, ranking eighth in total offense and seventh in scoring offense, wrapping up the regular season with a 14-3 record.

Before joining the Eagles, Moore served as the Cowboys’ offensive coordinator from 2019 to 2022; he guided the offense to the top spot in the league for total yardage in two seasons and manuvered them into the top six for scoring on three occasions. He held the same role with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2023 before getting dismissed with the rest of the staff.
