Floodwaters have the potential to render roads impassable, particularly in areas with poor drainage. Historically, floods have caused closures on major routes such as Interstates 64 and 65, forcing detours and travel disruptions.
The NWS advises residents to avoid flooded roadways, as conditions may rapidly deteriorate.
What Is a Flood Warning?
The NWS issues these warnings when flooding is imminent or occurring.
“River flooding can be caused by heavy rainfall, dam failures, rapid snowmelt and ice jams,” the NWS said on its website.
The NWS explained that minor river flooding “means that low-lying areas adjacent to the stream or river, mainly rural areas and farmland and secondary roadways near the river, flood.”

The NWS office in Louisville, Kentucky, said on X (formerly Twitter), on Monday: “Temperatures mainly above normal this week, but with that comes the forecast for thunderstorms Wednesday and Thursday. South Kentucky likely will see the warmest temperatures this week, with northern locations (for us, that means South Indiana and North Kentucky) being colder.”
