Guide: For Whom the Bells Tolls Full Quest Walkthrough in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2
Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors
After an explosive exit from Lord Semine’s wedding reception in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, Henry and Hans find themselves in jail. Henry can get out by doing some work and staying on his best behavior, but Hans admits to poaching, and without any evidence that he’s a noble, he’s doomed for the gallows.
It’s up to Henry to get Hans out of trouble, but it won’t be as simple as picking the lock to his cell and making an escape. In this quest you’ll need to heal Captain Thomas, the soldier from the beginning of the game, in order for him to verify your identity and save Hans. That’s easier said than done, and this just might be the most complex quest in the game, feeling more like a Hitman level than anything else.
For everything you need to heal Captain Thomas and get out of Trosky alive, just read through our guide below. Just make sure to work fast, as the 12 bells that warn of Hans’ execution are on a real-world timer that is constantly ticking down.
Busywork at Trosky Castle in KCD2
This quest starts off with Henry being forced to accomplish some menial tasks. First you’ll be carrying sacks from a cart to a coalshed, and then the Blacksmith will task you with making horseshoes.
Finish up the horseshoes and deliver them to Kabat. Kabat can also sell lockpicks, if you need them, so remember his location.
Once you’re done with the horseshoes you’re given a bit more freedom, and we can beeline to the solution of this quest.
Getting Lockpicks at Trosky Castle in KCD2
You’ll need lockpicks in order to open an important chest. Talk to Cook Fanka near the forge, and she’ll explain that she needs the Blacksmith to open her door. Offer to help, explain the situation to the Blacksmith, and you’ll then be able to take Lockpicks from the red jar on the shelf near the forge.
You can also buy Lockpicks from Kabat, but since you don’t start with any money, this is an easier way to get some.
Getting a Fever Tonic for Captain Thomas in KCD2
If you go to the Chapel and examine Captain Thomas you’ll discover that he needs something for his fever, and the doctor has the recipe for such a potion somewhere in his quarters. You don’t need to examine Captain Thomas though, and instead you can get the Fever Tonic first.
To make this section easier, don’t talk to Jarek in the courtyard. Jarek can offer to take you to Captain Thomas, but after he does, he returns to guard duty in the tower near the doctor’s quarters, and you don’t want him lurking around.
From the courtyard with the forge, head up the wooden staircase in the Southwest corner and you’ll want to quickly head upstairs. You’ll go up six staircases before coming to a short hallway with doors on the left and right at the end. The door on the right is the doctor’s quarters. Inside you will find Katherine, who won’t report you to the guards.
In this room you will find the book Physician’s Journal on the shelf in the South corner. Pick that up and read it to learn how to make a Fever Tonic.
There’s a small chest in the room. Use the lockpick you acquired to open the chest and take everything inside. It’s mostly just herbs, but they’ll be useful.
There’s also an alchemy workbench in the room, and you need to make a Fever Tonic. This requires Feverfew, Ginger, and Elderberry Leaves.
- Add Wine.
- Boil x3 Feverfew for 2 turns.
- Grind x1 Elderberry Leaves with mortar and pestle and add.
- Add x2 Ginger.
- Pick up a Phial and distill.
If you did it correctly, you’ll have a Fever Tonic in your inventory, and you just need to give it to Captain Thomas. Return to the courtyard.
Getting to Captain Thomas in the Chapel in KCD2
Captain Thomas is located in the Chapel, which is past the guards to the Southeast corner of the courtyard. There are several methods to make your way up to the Chapel, which we outline in our how to reach Thomas in the Maiden Tower guide, but we’ll summarize here.
If you’ve spoken to Kabat and Jarek about the rosary beads that were lost at dice, you can explain to Jarek that the Chamberlain has them. After that, he’ll be willing to escort you to the chapel to see Captain Thomas. This is the most stress-free way to access the tower.
Alternatively, if you’ve been told about the well cave by the men working at the gallows, you can climb down the well, ask Hans to distract the guard, and then climb up all of the staircases you come across until you finally reach the tower. If you do get caught by a guard, we recommend sprinting to your destination and then attempting to talk them down once you get there.
Once you give Captain Thomas the Fever Tonic, this will conclude the For Whom the Bells Tolls quest.
