Despite losing outfielder Juan Soto via free agency, the New York Yankees have had an active offseason. But as they prepare to defend their American League pennant in 2025, there’s one glaring hole still remaining on the infield. Could it be filled by Chicago Cubs second baseman Nico Hoerner?
General manager Brian Cashman signed Paul Goldschmidt to a one-year deal to take over first base in the Bronx. However, there hasn’t been a corresponding move to fill the Gleyber Torres-sized hole left behind once he departed for the Detroit Tigers.

MLB analyst Robbie Hyde thinks the Yankees and Cubs should come together to make a one-for-one swap. His idea would send Hoerner to the Yankees and starting pitcher Clarke Schmidt to the Windy City.
“This would be an everyday option to plug in there,” Hyde said of Hoerner. “This is a guy with a high-contact bat. … You could put him at second base and move Jazz Chisholm back to third. Whatever it may be, I think it would be an awesome addition for the Yankees.
“(Schmidt) took a big step forward this past year. … I think it would be a nice addition for the Cubs’ rotation.”
Hoerner, who won a Gold Glove Award with the Cubs in 2023, is coming off a season in which he posted a .708 OPS with seven home runs, 35 doubles, 48 RBI, 86 runs scored, and 31 steals through 641 plate appearances. He’s set to earn $11.5 million in 2025, which is his second season of a three-year, $35 million deal.
