NBA Fans React to Controversial Changes in All-Star Game Format

The 74th NBA All-Star Game has come and gone, and it involved a little bit of basketball and a ton of other things.

For the past few years, the NBA All-Star game has been trending in the wrong direction, but it reached a tipping point last season when the Western Conference defeated the Eastern Conference, 211-186, in a game that broke numerous scoring records.

So, NBA commissioner Adam Silver decided to mix things up this season. Instead of the traditional East vs. West format, Sunday night’s festivities turned into a mini-tournament that featured four teams.

The All-Star player pool was drafted into three teams — Kenny’s Young Guns, Chuck’s Global Stars, and Shaq’s OGs — Team Candace was later introduced and involved the winner of the Rising Stars game from Friday.

Shaq’s OG’s away with the win, but fans were not happy with the format, and they weren’t shy to tell us how they really felt on social media.

There were only a handful of people who were fans of this new format.

Nonetheless, many fans were not big on the new format. However, it’s not just fans; current NBA player and future Hall of Famer Draymond Green had some choice words for the format.

Green was on the panel for TNT, and he was not shy to tell us how he really felt about this year’s game.

“You work all year to be an All-Star and you get to play up to 40 and then you’re done. This is so unfair to Victor Wembanyama, who just took this game really seriously,” Green said on air. “Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who just took this game really seriously. When you talk about chasing after the points record, Melo, Kobe, and all these guys that had great scoring nights. They don’t get the opportunity to do that with this game.

“All so we can watch some rising stars. We about to watch the Olympic team, now we get the treat of watching the Olympic team play against a U-19 team. Come on, what are we doing? This is ridiculous.”

He later added: “This sucks, it ain’t basketball.”

Silver and his people have some work to do, as this year’s game involved doing just a bit too much rather than playing basketball.

The target score of 40 was not enough for players who worked their butt off to make this game.

It’s safe to say that this format is a one-and-done. The hope is the NBA returns to the old format with a twist to get players involved and motivated.
