Mets 3-Player Trade Proposal Would Replace Frankie Montas With $15 Million Veteran
The New York Mets signed Frankie Montas to a two-year, $34 million deal in the offseason. They hoped he could be a key player alongside Sean Manaea and Kodai Senga in their rotation. However, according to Newsday’s Tim Healey, Montas will be shut down for six to eight weeks with a lat strain.
“Frankie Montas has a high-grade right lat strain, Carlos Mendoza said,” Healey wrote on X. “He won’t throw for 6-8 weeks. He’s going to New York for a PRP injection now.”

Being shut down and missing spring training means Montas is going to miss a chunk of time after the season starts. FanSided’s Jacob Mountz proposed this trade that replaces Montas with a veteran from the St. Louis Cardinals:
- Mets receive: right-handed pitcher Erick Fedde
- Cardinals receive: third baseman Brett Baty and outfielder Carson Benge (Mets’ No.5 prospect)
“Given that Fedde is a one-year mid-rotation rental, we couldn’t expect the Mets to part with any top talent,” wrote Mountz. “But a package like this would be a solid haul for a desperate team such as the Cardinals.”
Fedde has played in seven big league seasons and has a 4.82 ERA in his career. However, last season he had a 3.30 ERA between the Cardinals and Chicago White Sox. He struck out 154 batters as well.
Baty seemingly is buried on the Mets bench with Mark Vientos manning the hot corner. The Cardinals could take a chance on him knowing they may be forced to trade Nolan Arenado soon.
