Notorious Red Sox Killer Reportedly Signs Contract With AL West Contender
Rowdy Tellez reportedly is heading west, and Boston Red Sox fans probably hope he’ll stay there.
The veteran first baseman recently signed a minor league deal with the Seattle Mariners, according to a Thursday report from MLB insider Jon Heyman. Tellez’s contract includes an invitation to spring training.
To put it mildly, Tellez has killed the Red Sox throughout his career.
In 41 games against Boston, most of which while with the Toronto Blue Jays, Tellez has a .309 average with 14 homers, 29 RBIs and a 1.087 OPS. The homers, RBIs and OPS all are his best against any team, with the batting average ranking third.
So, yeah, when the Red Sox play the Mariners this season, they’ll be hoping Tellez isn’t on the field.

Tellez spent the first three-plus seasons of his career with the Blue Jays, who traded him to the Brewers during the 2021 campaign. He stayed in Milwaukee through the 2023 season before joining the Pirates last offseason.
In 131 games last season for Pittsburgh, Tellez hit .243 with 13 homers and a .691 OPS. Surprisingly, he went just 1-for-10 during a three-game series against the Red Sox in April.
