San Diego Padres’ ace Dylan Cease is entering the final year of his contract with the Padres. The Padres have reportedly been fielding trade offers for Cease because they likely won’t be able to re-sign him when he lands on the open market. Spotrac projects him to sign for $108 million next off-season.
R.J. Anderson of CBS Sports recently predicted Cease would clear his Spotrac projection by quite a lot. Anderson predicted the righty would sign a five-year contract worth $160 million after the 2025 season.

“Cease has maintained this whole ‘right-handed Blake Snell’ thing for years now,” Anderson wrote. “It’s not a perfect comparison for my purposes because Snell had better statistics and more prestige entering last winter (what with winning two Cy Young Awards and all). Nevertheless, there’s enough validity to it for me to employ Snell’s contract (and specifically his present-day value) as a template.”
Obviously, his value could either go up or down, depending on how he pitches in 2025 and whether he stays healthy. But if Cease stays healthy and pitches to the same level he has in years before, $160 million isn’t outlandish.
The righty is just 29 years old and two years removed from a Cy Young-caliber campaign. If all the pieces click, $160 million could end up being an underpay.
At that price, it’s tough to imagine the Padres would be able to re-sign him. Trade rumors may heat up again if the Padres learn that Cease is comfortably out of their price range.
