Trump Announces a New Mexico Tariff Deal ‘Out of Respect’ to Sheinbaum: What to Know
President Donald Trump announced Thursday that he is postponing 25 percent tariffs on most Mexican imports for one month following a conversation with Mexico’s president.
The decision comes after Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick indicated that tariffs on both Mexico and Canada would “likely” be delayed. This marks the second time Trump has postponed the tariffs since first unveiling them in early February. The temporary reprieve applies to goods that comply with the trade agreement Trump negotiated with Canada and Mexico during his first term.
Trump posted Thursday morning, “After speaking with President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico, I have agreed that Mexico will not be required to pay Tariffs on anything that falls under the USMCA Agreement. This Agreement is until April 2nd. I did this as an accommodation, and out of respect for, President Sheinbaum. Our relationship has been a very good one, and we are working hard, together, on the Border, both in terms of stopping Illegal Aliens from entering the United States and, likewise, stopping Fentanyl. Thank you to President Sheinbaum for your hard work and cooperation!”
