Yankees Reliever Tyler Matzek Might Begin Season on Injured List
When the New York Yankees lost out on the historic free agent chase of outfielder Juan Soto, they focused their offseason efforts on players who can help prevent runs. Among them: left-handed reliever Tyler Matzek.
The Yankees gave the 34-year-old left-hander a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training on Feb. 11. From 2020-24, Matzek went 8-9 with a 3.40 ERA with the Atlanta Braves in 143 appearances out of the Atlanta Braves’ bullpen.

However, if Matzek is going to pitch in the majors this year for the Yankees, it will have to wait.
According to multiple reports Friday, Matzek has an oblique injury that’s prevented him from pitching since Feb. 28. Depending on the severity of the injury, Matzek’s chances of making the Yankees’ opening day bullpen — a distinct possibility coming into camp — could be in jeopardy.
Yankees non-roster reliever Tyler Matzek hasn’t pitched since Feb. 28 due to an oblique injury. He had been a strong contender to make Opening Day roster.

Matzek and veteran left-handers Tim Hill and Rob Zastryzny were in the running for two or three bullpen jobs in the Yankees’ camp.
