Shane Lowry’s ‘S**t Finish’ Vents Frustration at Rory McIlroy’s Expense

Shane Lowry heads into Championship Sunday at the Masters at 5-under overall. He signed for an even-par 72 and is seven shots behind the leader, Rory McIlroy.
They may be best friends, but Lowry did not want to talk about his buddy when he is in contention at a major.
After his round, the Irishman did not tolerate the media diminishing his spot in the tournament.
“I’m not going to stand here and talk about Rory for 10 minutes,” Lowry said. “I’m trying to win the tournament, as well. I know that’s what y’all want me to talk about, but I’ve just had a shit finish, I’ve got a chance to win the Masters tomorrow, and I’m going to go hit some balls.”

Lowry is among the eight players within reach of the year’s first major championship. Why would he be focused on Rory when he is in contention?
Not to mention, Lowry was not in the mood for nonsense after his frustrating bogey-bogey finish on Moving Day.
“I felt like I let a good day go there at the end, so I’m obviously disappointed,” he said. “A few back, but I’m in a nice position, and things can happen around here.”
He went from 7-under to 5-under in the last two holes, and the media wanted to know more about Rory than him. Lowry is in contention and has been one of the most consistent players in 2025.
With him playing a couple of groups ahead of Rory, Lowry could feel the energy shift around Augusta National.
However, that is nothing new to him.
“There was an unbelievable atmosphere out there,” Lowry stated. “Rory was playing good— the roars, you had to stand off it a little bit, wait for those to happen. But I’ve been around the block long enough to know I need to do that. If I play the way I can play, I’ll be there or thereabouts tomorrow.”
Lowry already has one major championship under his belt. He won the 2019 Open Championship at Royal Portrush, so he knows what kind of pressure will be on him.
He is also no stranger to good finishes in majors. Lowry finished T6 at last year’s PGA Championship, T19 at the U.S. Open, and solo 6th in the Open.
His best finish in Augusta came in 2022 with a T3.
Lowry will play with World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler for the final round of The Masters. They tee off at 2 p.m. ET. They will be two groups ahead of McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau.
