Tiger Woods’ TGL Files Trademark for New Team, but Not the City Expected
The first season of TGL, an indoor golf simulator league started by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, was a raging success.
During the first three months of the golf season, while the players were starting to gear up heading into The Masters in April, the hype around professional golf was at an all-time high. It has TGL to thank for that after many of the top stars on the PGA Tour were competing in prime time.
Now, Woods is looking to build off of that heading into year two. Rumors have long suggested that an expansion team could be headed to TGL in 2026, and now some light has been shed on who that might be.
TGL has filed a trademark for a presumed Detroit team, named Motor City Golf Club, according to NUCLR Golf.
“The TGL Golf League appears to have filed a trademark for Motor City Golf Club in what may be an indication of the first expansion move for the league,” NUCLR Golf wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “Reports have indicated that one additional team could be added for this upcoming season.”

A Detroit team would be a nice changeup from the current group of cities that have a squad in the league, most of which are coastal. However, the Motor City isn’t the hub that many thought would be added to TGL.
Previous speculation had thrown out there that Dallas or another Texas city could be getting a team as part of league expansion.
The Lone Star State is an obvious candidate to be added to TGL, as it is home to two of the best and most popular players in the sport. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and three-time major champion Jordan Spieth were both born in Dallas and both played college golf at the University of Texas in Austin.
Neither star played in TGL this season, so a team in Dallas could also attract both of them to play in 2026. The star power that Scheffler and Spieth would add plenty of flare to the already-loaded league.
Still, expansion in any big city is a win for TGL. More PGA Tour stars who have a prominent role in the first chapters of the story of the golf season will only draw in more fans, so bring on Motor City Golf Club.
