Tears As ‘Sweetest Soul’ Cat Ends Up in Shelter After 10 Years at Home
After a decade living in a loving home with his own human, an elderly cat found himself back in shelter with his world suddenly turned upside down.
In a viral TikTok video shared on Friday under the username @frangrzesik, a pet rescuer from Illinois, and director for NAWS Humane Society, shared the story of Grandpaw, hoping it could help him find a new home.
“Grandpaw lost his whole world when his owner passed away. He doesn’t understand where he is, or why the familiar voice he heard every day is gone. Grandpaw is lonely,” she writes in the clip.
“At the shelter, the kitty is refusing to eat, and is completely shutting down, wondering what happened to his family and why he’s there all by himself.
“As confusing as this all is to him, he continues to love. He still has so much love to give. Grandpaw isn’t looking for a second chapter. He’s looking for a quiet ending full of love. He deserves it,” the post continues.
The post read: “Grandpaw is the sweetest soul. Since he isn’t eating at our facility our doctors are watching him and treating him accordingly.”
Doctors at the shelter are currently waiting for Grandpaw’s blood-work results to come back to see if he has any underlying health issues, although they think the reason behind his decision to stop eating is probably depression.
With over 5.8 million animals abandoned across American shelters, adopting a pet instead of buying is more important than ever. Pets who don’t get adopted or returned to their original owners are often put down to make space for newcomers.
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says that about 273,000 cats and 334,000 dogs were euthanized in 2024.
Older animals are often overlooked in shelters, with a 25 percent adoption rate, compared to the 60 percent adoption rate of younger ones. But there are plenty of reasons to adopt them.
Older pets are often trained and obedient, and they are also likely to settle into a home more easily and quickly than their younger counterparts, because they are already used to life with people as well as other pets.

The video quickly went viral on social media and it has so far received over 836,000 views and more than 126,300 likes on the platform.
One user, Mariamurray841, commented: “Don’t sleep on those senior cats- they are the BEST!”
Steve Corney posted: “We adopted a senior cat whose owner passed away. She was the sweetest little thing.”
Akwon added: “Remember that they are a chapter in our lives but you are their whole book.”
