A woman and an infant were among the dead at the WestFest carnival in Utah’s West Valley City when an altercation between two groups of people saw a teenager pull out a gun and start shooting, police said. Others were injured.
West Valley City said their officers saw the altercation take place at around 9:20 p.m. local time and moved in to break it up when a 16-year-old male from one of the groups pulled out a gun and fired.
“One officer fired and did not hit the suspect, but the 16-year-old male suspect was taken into custody,” police said in a statement posted to X.
Three people died in the shooting, including a 41-year-old female and an eight-month-old infant, both of them bystanders and not involved with the altercation, and an 18-year-old male who was with one of the groups.
Two others were injured, both hit in the arm. They were a a 17-year-old female and a 15-year-old male. “It is not clear if they were connected to the groups involved,” police said.
Officers took the suspect into custody and he will face questioning overnight.
“Detectives are currently conducting interviews with witnesses. We believe there could be more people out there who witnessed the incident and we would like to talk to them,” police said.
