AL Executive on Rafael Devers Deal: ‘We Got Our Luka Dončić Trade!’
🎙️ Voice is AI-generated. Inconsistencies may occur.
Reactions are coming in from all over the baseball world about the Rafael Devers trade that went down Sunday night.
While the Boston Red Sox are scrambling to figure out what comes next and how they build the lineup without Devers, one American League executive was quick to compare this trade to a basketball blockbuster.

“We got our Luka Dončić trade!” one American League evaluator told Brittany Ghiroli of The Athletic. “It should have happened in spring training, but no one saw it coming now. Our group chat was blowing up.”
While the Devers deal only involved two teams, unlike the Dončić acquisition, the magnitude of the trade is comparable. One of the sport’s best players was traded in the blink of an eye without any sort of warning signs.
The Red Sox get to dump the remainder of Devers’ contract, about $255 million, onto the Giants. That in itself may be the best part of the deal right now.
However, another AL executive was quick to point out the obvious with the saved money.
“At the end of the day, no one wants to hear about money saved,” an AL executive told Ghiroli. “What will they do with Devers’ money? That’s what will decide what this trade was.”
Craig Breslow will certainly have a lot of pressure in the offseason as he looks to reshape a Red Sox roster that hasn’t lived up to expectations this season. Fans were already frustrated, and trading away Devers grows the frustrations even more.
