Bad News For Mets as $5 Million Righty Suffers Potentially Catastrophic Injury

Just when the New York Mets thought their battered pitching staff was getting at least one good break, another starter has suffered what appeared to be a catastrophic injury on Thursday.
The scary moment happened at Citi Field, in what turned out to be a 4-0 Mets victory over the Atlanta Braves, when righty starter Griffin Canning collapsed to the ground on the left of the mound in the third inning.
According to Mets manager Carlos Mendoza, as quoted by the New York Post, the team believes that Canning suffered an injury to his left Achilles tendon.

The injury comes just two days after New York’s top offseason addition to its pitching staff, former Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Frankie Montas, made his season debut.
Montas suffered a lat muscle strain in his first bullpen session of spring training in February and had been on the injured list ever since.
The 32-year-old, 10-year veteran pitched five scoreless innings, allowing three hits and three walks while fanning five in his return.
Canning, 29, signed a one-year, $4.25 million free agent contract with the Mets in December, with bonuses that could bring the total value over $5 million, after pitching the first six seasons of his career with the Los Angeles Angels.
The righty was having a solid season at the back end of the Mets rotation, with a 3.91 ERA over 73 2/3 innings in 15 games, with a win-loss record of 7-3.
But with two outs in the third inning Thursday, Braves shortstop Nick Allen tapped an infield grounder to the right side. Canning took a step in an attempt to field the ground ball, but suddenly pulled up lame and hopped on his right leg a few times before collapsing with his left leg elevated.
“If it’s indeed a major Achilles injury,” wrote Jack Baer of Yahoo! Sports, “that would end Canning’s season after a strong start to his Mets career.”
Mets starters Kodai Senga and Tyler Megill have also hit the IL over the past two weeks, with hamstring and elbow injuries, respectively.
Southpaw Sean Manaea has also been out all season with an oblique strain, and suffered a setback to his rehab program with elbow discomfort earlier this week, but reportedly resumed a throwing program on Thursday.
