The Toronto Blue Jays went and acquired Jeff Hoffman in free agency during the offseason to be the team’s new closer. Unfortunately for Toronto, Hoffman has struggled mightily this season while the bullpen has struggled as a whole.

Sports Illustrated’s Nicholas Selbe recently predicted the Blue Jays would upgrade their bullpen by swinging a trade for Washington Nationals closer Kyle Finnegan.

“The Nationals righthander wouldn’t close for most contenders, considering his mediocre strikeout rate and career 3.51 ERA, but he’s nonetheless racked up 106 saves over the past five seasons and could at least fill a setup role for a better team than Washington,” Selbe wrote. “The Nats have little incentive to keep their 2024 All-Star past the deadline given his pending free agency, so Finnegan seems like a lock to change addresses by the time the calendar turns to August.”
Finnegan wasn’t highly sought after during the offseason, but he’s responded with 18 saves and a career-best 2.89 ERA.
The righty seems to be better than ever as he looks to post 30 or more saves for the second consecutive season.
The Blue Jays would be foolish not to pursue a deal for Finnegan. Adding him to the backend of games could allow Hoffman to return to a setup role while the Nationals’ righty closes games. It would be best for everybody involved, and the Blue Jays would likely win more games.
