Buccaneers’ Injury Updates Spell Great News for Baker Mayfield
Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield enjoyed the best season of his NFL career last season, and he was able to do that in spite of wide receiver Chris Godwin missing the back half of the year due to a severe ankle injury. Not only that, but star tackle Tristan Wirfs played through a knee injury.
Godwin and Wirfs were both expected to begin the season on the PUP list, but the Buccaneers have revealed some significant news on the two stalwarts with the season opener just a couple of weeks away.

Now, this does not mean that Godwin and Wirfs still won’t miss time. In fact, the general consensus is that Godwin still won’t be taking the field until October. But this is obviously a major step in the right direction for Mayfield and Tampa Bay.
Godwin has quietly been one of the most productive receivers in the NFL since entering the league in 2017. He posted four 1,000-yard campaigns in five seasons between 2020 and 2023 and appeared to be on his way to achieving the feat a fifth time last year before he suffered his injury.

Through seven games in 2024, Godwin caught 50 passes for 576 yards and five touchdowns, placing him well on pace for 1,000 yards.
Then there is Wirfs, who has established himself as one of the best tackles in football. The University of Iowa product has made four straight Pro Bowl appearance and has also earned a pair of First-Team All-Pro selections throughout that span, including last year.

Mayfield threw for 4,500 yards, 41 touchdowns and 16 interceptions while completing 71.4 percent of his passes and posting a 106.8 passer rating in 2024. He made the Pro Bowl for the second consecutive year and led the Bucs to their fourth straight NFC South title.
The Buccaneers will open the season when they face the Atlanta Falcons on the road Sept. 7.
