HEB Pretzel Recall Update as FDA Sets Risk Level

A Texas wholesaler is recalling some of its pretzels because of undeclared allergens.

The recall was initiated voluntarily by Dollins Pecan Co., Inc., based in Comanche, Texas, after it was discovered that the pretzels contained an undeclared wheat allergen not listed on the packaging.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said the omission could be dangerous for individuals with wheat sensitivities or celiac disease, who may experience reactions ranging from mild digestive issues to more serious health complications.

Dollins Pecan Co., Inc. could not be reached for comment.

According to the FDA, millions of people in the U.S. have food allergies or food sensitivities.

Food sensitivities can range from mild reactions to potentially life-threatening symptoms. The FDA recognizes nine major food allergens: milk, eggs, sesame, fish, tree nuts, crustacean shellfish, peanuts, wheat and soybeans.

The recall affects the H-E-B Blueberry Flavored Yogurt Pretzels.

In total, the recall covers 468 cases of pretzels, each case containing 12 packages of 8-ounce bags. The affected products were distributed exclusively in Texas grocery stores.

According to the FDA notice, the impacted pretzels carry the UPC code 9787011400, lot numbers 080226 and 080326, and best-by dates of 080226 and 080326.

The FDA has classified the recall as a Class II health risk. This classification is used when exposure to a product may cause temporary or medically reversible health consequences, or when the probability of serious adverse health effects is remote.

However, because the allergen was not properly listed in the “Contains” statement on the packaging, the risk is significant for those with wheat allergies or celiac disease.

In sensitive individuals, wheat can trigger reactions inclduing respiratory issues, skin reactions and, in some cases, life-threatening allergic responses.

Even trace amounts of undeclared wheat can cause hives, swelling, respiratory distress, or life-threatening anaphylaxis in allergic individuals.

For people with celiac disease, accidental gluten exposure can result in intestinal damage, severe digestive symptoms, fatigue, and other long-term complications.

The status of the recall is ongoing, and no injuries or illnesses related to the pretzels have been reported so far.

It comes after numerous bread products sold by Hillside Orchard Farms Inc., based in Georgia, were recalled last week due to undeclared allergens.

The recall was initiated due to the possible undeclared presence of eggs. The FDA issued a Class I risk classification for the recall on August 20.

The FDA warned in its recall notice that “people who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to egg run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.”

What Happens Next

Consumers who have purchased the affected products are urged not to consume them and to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
