Nicaragua has never featured in the finals of a World Cup but will look to break that duck in 2026 and begin its qualification campaign anew at home to Costa Rica on Friday. Los Pinoleros welcome Los Ticos to the Nicaraguan capital of Managua as the Estadio Nacional hosts these two teams for the first time in its history.
And that’s not the only first Nicaragua is hoping to see this weekend as it looks to snap the most stubborn of streaks against Costa Rica. That’s because the country’s only win in this rivalry to date came all the way back in February 1950, making it 75 years since Nicaragua last banked a victory in this head-to-head.
Costa Rica has featured at each of the last two World Cup finals and is well-backed to qualify for a third from a CONCACAF qualifying group that also includes Haiti and Honduras. Former Mexico boss Miguel Herrera has his side undefeated in nine competitive matches (excluding penalties), while Nicaragua has won just one of its last four.
