Costco Recall Issues Warning Over Wine Bottles in 12 States

Costco, one of America’s largest warehouse retailers, has issued a recall for its Kirkland Signature Prosecco Valdobbiadene after the retailer warned that some 750-milliliter bottles may “spontaneously shatter.”

The recall covers bottles sold at Costco locations in multiple Midwestern states between April 25 and August 26, 2025, and applies to item number 1879870. The retailer is offering full refunds to members who present the recall notice sent by the company.

Newsweek contacted Costco for comment via an online form on its website outside normal working hours.

Why It Matters

Spontaneous shattering of glass bottles, particularly those containing carbonated beverages like prosecco, presents a risk not only to consumers, but also to store employees and anyone in proximity to stored bottles.

The recall, issued in September, covers stores in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

Consumers are advised to not open affected bottles and to not return them to Costco warehouses. Instead, the recall notice advises consumers to wrap unopened bottles in paper towels and place them in a plastic bag before disposing to “avoid risk from shattered glass.”

Costco apologized for “any inconvenience caused.”

Costco’s Kirkland Signature is the warehouse retailer’s exclusive private-label brand, introduced in 1995. Named after the company’s former headquarters in Kirkland, Washington, the brand spans hundreds of product categories, including groceries, household goods, clothing, and wine.

Kirkland Signature is designed to offer high-quality products at lower prices than national brands, often manufactured by well-known producers under Costco’s label.

The brand has earned a reputation for consistency and value, with many items receiving strong consumer reviews. Kirkland products are only available at Costco locations or through its website, and they are a cornerstone of the company’s membership-based retail strategy.

Earlier this year, LNK International issued a voluntary recall of its Kirkland Signature Severe Cold & Flu Plus Congestion medication sold at Costco due to a batch mistakenly being released after it was rejected for potential foreign material contamination.

And earlier this month, Costco shared a recall notice from the Rolling Pin Baking Company over a labeling error on its Dubai Style Chocolate sold at the retail giant. The product, item #1932972, was available between May 1 and August 29, 2025. The allergen warning incorrectly listed “gluten” instead of “wheat,” which may pose a risk to individuals with wheat allergies.
