Warriors Interested in Trey Murphy in Blockbuster Trade
The Golden State Warriors remain in a standstill with restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga as training camp nears.
More news: Warriors Have Made New Offer to Jonathan Kuminga
As the two sides continue to search for common ground on a new deal, NBA insider Jake Fischer provided some more insight into the talks on a Bleacher Report live stream.
Since the Warriors haven’t yet offered a deal Kuminga wants, there’s a chance the four-year forward accepts the qualifying offer. If he were to take the qualifying offer, he would have a no-trade clause, meaning the Warriors would have no power over his future. If Kuminga doesn’t want to be traded, he could remain with Golden State and leave for nothing next offseason.
That would be a problem for a number of reasons for Golden State, as he’s currently their best trade asset. Thus, having Kuminga on a bigger (and tradeable) contract this year would be a much better option for the Warriors.
And if the Warriors had Kuminga on a contract in the $25 million per year range or so, there’s one player they’re reportedly “really” interested in.

“Trey Murphy in New Orleans is someone the Warriors really have interest in,” Fischer said Tuesday. “Someone they almost took in that 2021 NBA Draft at No. 14 overall when they were deciding between Trey Murphy and Moses Moody, just like the Warriors were deciding between Kuminga and Franz Wagner.”
Murphy could emerge as a serious trade candidate at this year’s deadline as the Pelicans appear nowhere near contention coming off a disappointing 21-61 season. Murphy is entering the first season of a four-year, $112 million contract extension, and would be a perfect player to add on the wing alongside Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler and Draymond Green.
Murphy has improved in each of his first four seasons in the NBA, culminating in a 2024-25 season that saw him average career-highs in points (21.2), rebounds (5.1) and assists (3.5) while matching his career-highs in steals (1.1). He shot 45.4 percent from the field, 36.1 percent from deep and 88.7 percent from the free throw line.
Murphy won’t come cheap, but a package headlined with Kuminga and picks would definitely be a good starting point for New Orleans. The only way Golden State can even entertain that kind of move, though, is if Kuminga doesn’t accept the qualifying offer, and instead signs a larger, multi-year deal this offseason.
