South Carolina shooting sparks campus ‘lockdown’—alert %%page%% %%sep%% %%sitename%%
South Carolina State University’s campus has been locked down following a shooting, according to an alert, with some students told to stay in their residence rooms.
The alert issued on the university website on Saturday night said there were “shots fired” at Hugine Suites–on-campus student housing.
“Hugine Suites residents who are not in the complex report to SHM (the Smith–Hammond–Middleton Memorial Center),” the alert said. “Anyone in Hugine Suites stay put. Students in other residence halls return to your rooms. Off-campus residents, please exit the campus.”
The university canceled homecoming events scheduled for Sunday and told non-students to stay away from campus.
It is not yet known whether anyone has been harmed.
South Carolina Senatory Tim Scott said in a post on X: “My office is closely monitoring the situation at South Carolina State University. Praying for everyone’s safety on campus.”
