Fighter jets intercept unauthorized aircraft during Trump visit
North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) jets were scrambled in response to four general aviation aircraft violating Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) airspace over Norfolk, Virginia, where President Donald Trump was visiting.
Trump was at Naval Station Norfolk on Sunday where he hosted a Salute to the Fleet, honoring the Navy and its servicemembers as part of its 250th birthday celebrations, although the NORAD Statement did not refer to the U.S. president’s visit.
NORAD said the first civilian aircraft violated the TFR at 11.55 a.m., prompting a NORAD fighter aircraft to escort until it landed after using flares to alert the pilot. Other aircraft violated the TFR at 12.30 p.m., 4.15 p.m. and 4.46 p.m. NORAD said in the statement.
Sunday’s incidents were the latest among TFR violations in recent months, which include over Bedminster, New Jersey and Trump’s Mar-a-Lago property in Florida.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
