Liechtenstein’s dream of featuring at the 2026 World Cup is already done and dusted, but Kazakhstan can keep its own hopes alive with a win when the two teams collide on Friday. The Hawks boast one qualifying win in Group J thus far, but sit seven points off the qualifying pace with only three games left to play.
Second place and a route via the play-offs is the best Kazakhstan can hope for at this stage, but that should be enough to inspire Talgat Baysufinov’s men this week. This will also be interim coach Baysufinov’s third debut as chief of the national team after Ali Aliyev was relieved of his duties at the start of October.
The only previous meeting between these teams ended in a 2-0 win for Kazakhstan earlier this year, and they are hoping to now repeat that result on home soil. The Blue-Reds may not have much to fight for other than pride, though that’s saying a lot considering it’s been five years since the team last recorded a competitive win.
