Trump in Israel to Cement 20-Point Peace Plan, Hostages Freed: Live Updates
Hamas has released an initial batch of hostages under the first phase of the Gaza ceasefire agreement with Israel, which was brokered by U.S. President Donald Trump, who is in the region to compound and celebrate his historic peace deal.
Trump’s tough-talking diplomacy has delivered this huge and potentially pivotal moment for the Middle East, laying the foundations of a path that could lead to a solution to a decades-long conflict between Israel and its Arab neighbors over the Palestinian issue.
But implementation of Trump’s 20-point plan for Gaza is in its early stages. There are many unanswered questions, and the issues involved are complex, loaded with a deep and painful history that no leader has yet been able to overcome. Will Trump?
- Hostage and prisoner exchange underway between Hamas and Israel
- Trump is due to address the Israeli Knesset on Monday
- U.S. president will head to Egypt for a summit on his Gaza peace deal
- Deal then moves to Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, Hamas giving up its weapons and power
- Arab security forces would enter Gaza to facilitate the temporary transition of power to “Board of Peace”
- Eventually, the Palestinian Authority would take over power in Gaza
- Trump has declared: “The war is over”
