Man Questioning Hotel Choice After Finding ‘Nastiest Thing’ in Closet
A man was left questioning his choice of hotel after finding something unthinkable in the closet of the room he was staying in.
Matt, from Orlando, Florida, travels for work and has always favored low cost over comfort when it comes to picking a place to stay.
“My wife makes fun of me because I book cheap hotels when it’s just myself and the guys,” Matt told Newsweek. That proved to be the key motivating factor behind his choice of hotel during a stopoff while driving to Tennessee with some colleagues for a car show.
“It was late, around 1 a.m., and we were exhausted, so we were looking up hotels to stop for the night,” Matt said. “We pulled off the highway and had two hotels in front of us, and I chose this one because it was $20 cheaper.”
Price is a key motivator when it comes to purchasing decisions today. In June, a poll conducted by IT firm Integris found that 75 percent of United States consumers have a preference for U.S.-made goods, but other factors, including price, were deemed more important.
Unfortunately, Matt’s choice of hotel would prove costly in a way he could never have possibly predicted. After making his way down a “long, dimly lit hallway,” Matt got to his room, put his suitcase on the bed and thought, “Well, this place isn’t that bad.” Then he opened the closet, and everything changed.
“I opened up the cabinet to see if there were any extra sheets and blankets, and that’s where I was met with the tooth; right on the edge of the shelf, right next to the iron and a set of hangers,” Matt said.
He was shocked, repulsed even. It was amusing yet utterly baffling at the same time. Matt said he recalls standing there “laughing and trying to think up scenarios as to how and why this tooth would have ended up there and why they wouldn’t have bothered throwing it away.”
The discovery sparked any number of wild theories among him and his travel companion. “We tossed around the probability of drugs or bad hygiene, but we were also pretty spooked as the room had two connecting doors and then obviously the main door,” he said.
“It was super weird. We’ve found other things in rooms while traveling like men’s white underwear—literally, whitey tighties—socks, etc., but never something like this.”
Matt decided to post a picture of the discovery to Reddit under the handle u/Mattfillups. “Quite possibly the nastiest thing I’ve ever encountered in a hotel,” he wrote alongside the post. “Now I understand why my wife says ‘you need to spend more money on nicer hotels’ when I travel.”
If there is any positive to come out of the experience, it is that the discovery has changed the way Matt approaches choosing a hotel for one of his work trips.
“This one was one of the worst I’ve seen, and it was super creepy,” he said. “I made a promise to my wife that I will either just have her book our hotels moving forward, or I will spring for the extra $50 to have something nicer.”
