WWE Runs Huge Injury Angle on SmackDown

WWE has run a serious injury angle near the end of “Friday Night SmackDown.” Jacob Fatu was scheduled to meet Drew McIntyre inside the SAP Center in San Jose. Moments before he was set to make his entrance, Fatu was found bloodied and trapped under backstage equipment. It also appeared that some of Fatu’s teeth were on the ground.

The segment was run after reports surfaced of Fatu suffering a non-wrestling-related injury. Fatu could miss in-ring time until 2026.

Who Replaced Jacob Fatu?

“SmackDown” general manager Nick Aldis briefly addressed the attack while McIntyre demanded to be declared the No. 1 contender for the Undisputed WWE Championship. Titleholder Cody Rhodes stormed out and accused McIntyre of attacking Fatu, which “The Scottish Warrior” denied. Rhodes ended up putting his championship at stake without his professional wrestling gear on.

Rhodes showed more aggression in the match than he usually does. “The American Nightmare” gouged McIntyre’s eyes and even bit him. McIntyre landed a Future Shock DDT, but Rhodes managed to get his shoulder up during a pin attempt.

Rhodes eventually answered with the Cody Cutter. The match ended after Rhodes was disqualified for drilling McIntyre with his championship. Rhodes removed the announce table cover before McIntyre poked him in the eyes. Rhodes recovered and went for Cross Rhodes on the table before WWE security intervened.

Aldis tried talking sense into Rhodes, but he climbed up the top turnbuckle and dove on McIntyre and the security team. “Friday Night SmackDown” ended with Rhodes in the ring, while security took McIntyre up the entrance ramp.
