Deion Sanders Doesn’t Hold Back After Colorado’s Historical Loss

The Colorado Buffaloes looked aimless after a 2-4 start to the season that only included wins against Delaware and Wyoming before appearing to find some momentum with an impressive 24-17 victory over then-No. 22 Iowa State.

Following the team’s bye week, Colorado entered its contest against Utah headed in the right direction, but the momentum the team found just two weeks prior evaporated in an instant. The Buffaloes fell into a 43-0 halftime deficit en route to the worst loss in the 72-game history of the “Rumble in the Rockies” rivalry between Colorado and Utah.

Following the devastating loss, head coach Deion Sanders admitted he was “dumfounded.”

“This is bad. This is probably the worst beating I’ve ever had except when my momma whooped me as a kid,” Sanders said before going through the stats showing Utah’s destruction of the Buffaloes. “…Sometimes you just are dumbfounded, man,” Sanders said. “You just look at this day and say, ‘Wow, what happened?’ There’s no way.”

Sanders accepted blame for the team’s loss, but was left scratching his head as to how his team could be defeated 53-7.

“It starts with me, it starts with the coaching staff. Let’s forget the guys for a minute, let’s start at the top,” Sanders said. “I’m trying to figure that one out. I really am.”

“…Let’s identify the why first,” Sanders added. “You know, that’s what I want to know — why? OK, what about this play — why? Who was that? What about that play — why? Why can’t we get the ball off? Why? You know? Why? I need to know all these whys before we can move on and even think about something down the street.”

Colorado fell to 3-5 this season with the loss and need to win three of its next four contests to become bowl eligible.
