Nick Mangold Dead at 41: Latest Tributes to New York Jets Great
Football fans and pros alike have begun paying tribute to Nick Mangold, the 41-year-old former Jets player who passed away Saturday night following complications of kidney disease.
Mangold spent all 11 seasons in the NFL with the Jets. He was named All-pro three times during his time with the Jets. He was named First-team All-Pro in 2009 and 2010, and was Second-team in 2011.
What To Know
- Jets owner Woody Johnson hailed Mangold as a true Jets legend who was the “heartbeat” of the team’s offensive line and “a beloved teammate whose leadership and toughness defined an era of jets football.”
- Former Jets coach Rex Ryan, who coached Mangold during his time with the team, called Mangold’s passing “brutal,” and remembered him as an “awesome” player. “I feel so bad for his wife and family,” Ryan said on air ahead of Sunday’s NFL midday kickoffs, breaking down in tears upon hearing the news.
- Ohio State, where Mangold attended college, posted on X that the school’s football program is “saddened” by the news of his passing and “sends heartfelt condolences to his family and friends”
- Sports commentator and media personality Pat McAfee in a tribute on X praised Mangold, saying, “The world lost a damn good man and obviously a legendary beard.”
